Nirvana was formed by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic in 1987, and drummer Dave joined in 1990 when they had already released their album Bleach.
Dave admits being shocked when he first met the pair, as they were not what he was expecting.
"I remember being in the same room with them and thinking, 'What? That's Nirvana? Are you kidding?' because on their record cover they looked like psycho lumberjacks but I was like,
'What, that little dude and that big motherf*****? You're kidding me.' I laughed, I was like, 'No way!'" he recalled to Q magazine.
Kurt committed suicide in 1994, and Dave went on to form the Foo Fighters.
Although he had always been happy as the drummer in Nirvana, Foo Fighters saw him become the vocal point of a band and he initially struggled.
"I didn't ever aspire to being the person out front in the spotlight," he said.
"But when the Foo Fighters started I realised I'd been thrown into that position and it was incredibly uncomfortable for me. The responsibility of being someone larger than life seemed too much for me."
