I cant stop reading webnews about Japan. It is wreaking havoc on my brain. Ive been to Japan 11 times and feel a huge connection to the country and its culture; Ive even contemplated moving there many times. What is happening is absolutely horrendous. I mean, horrible things happen everyday on this planet but this is pretty serious, and not just for the people of Japan but potentially many other countries as well. Again it raises the question of the safety of nuclear power. Obviously, it isnt THAT safe. Yes, hundreds of thousands of people have died in coal mines over the past 200 years, but those accidents are always localized and dont threaten people who dont rely on the resource thousands of miles away. There are a whole lot of questions raised here about liability, responsibility and expectations. Who pays for the farmers broccoli that he cant sell now because its irradiated? Who pays the families their wages while they are evacuated from their hometowns and cant work? Who pays for the farmers broccoli 10 years from now that he still cant sell because its still toxic? Should GE (General Electric, who manufactured the reactor(s) that are melting down) pay? Should TEPCO (the company that runs the plant itself) pay? Should they both pay? 50/50? 60/40? What a mess.
