My live setup for Swan

« on: March 25, 2011, 04:44:50 PM »

Hey all, thought I'd give a little rundown of the gear I use onstage with my band Swan. Pretty simple setup (unless you consider a 9-pedal floorboard complex!) but who isnt running pedals live these days? If you wanna replicate the diverse sounds most bands employ on their albums you have to have lots of pedals to do it. So heres the first stop on the chain-of-rock:

In order I run from my guitar into:

MXR Red Compressor
Boss Super Octave
Line 6 Distortion Modeler
Digitech Whammy Pedal
Small Stone Nano Phase
Line 6 Delay Modeler with Foot Controller
MXR Micro Amp

In addition sometimes I run into a Boss Loop Pedal for some fun looping madness.

I mostly run the Line 6 Gold for distortion but for the songs "The One" I have the Octave pedal and Small Stone on the whole time and for "El Camino" I have the Octave pedal on the whole song. Also I use the Whammy pedal for the solo in "El Camino" for all the quick octave stretching licks. Its a great effect.

And for the main guitar / amp combo:

Its a Traynor YBA-1 Bassmaster Head (roughly '72 I believe) into a Riviera cabinet. I actually have no idea what the cabinet has inside for speakers; Ive searched online for info and cant find anything on Riviera cabinets. Regardless, it sounds dope! The Traynor Bassmaster head was considered the "Canadian Marshall" back in the '70s. Its roughly a combination of a 60's Fender Bassman and 60's Marshall plexi. Sounds like a plexi for 1/3 of the price!!!

My main axe is the Hagstrom Viking. I got it 2 years ago as part of my endorsement deal with Hagstrom. I threw in a pair of Sheptone reverse engineered '58 PAF style pickups and it sounds amazing! Check out his website: www.sheptone.com

For backup guitars I also employ a Hagstrom Tremar (tuned E,A,C#,G,G,E) for "Give Up The Ghost," a Hagstrom Super Swede as a backup for the Viking and also a Godin LGX Series with Piezzo pickup (tuned E,B,E,G#,B,E) for "Unfamiliar." It has 2 outputs and I run a direct out from the piezzo pickup through a DI for an acoustic sound and blend that with the regular clean tone going to the amp and it sounds huge! Great as an acoustic guitar simulator in the verse and I can also run some crunch distortion for the chorus as well.
