"Bottom" barre chords

« on: January 15, 2011, 08:09:17 PM »

Hey Murray,

I ran across your YT channel and love your playing technique - REALLY fluid, kudos.  Anyways, I am a novice and have trouble with the "bottom" end barre chords (Bb and on).  My hands are rather small and have difficulty using my ring finger to push down the 4, 3, and 2 strings.  I end up using my index to make the bar and my middle, ring, and pinkie to push those strings individually.

Any tips on getting that to work better for me?  I have seen others do the "three finger" method as well so maybe it is an accepted technique.  If that works for me should I stick with it or try and learn it the other way?

Thanks for any help in advance!

hey man, yeah those are tricky chords, but if you can make your ring finger bend slightly "inside out" so the knuckle is flexed towards the fretboard then it might be easier. But its bent so that the ring finger is lifted and doesnt touch the thin E string so that string is fretted by the barred first finger. Make sense?Huh

Also, if the action on your guitar is high (and these chords are always harder on an acoustic) then it makes it more difficult too. See if you can make the chords work higher up the fretboard around 7-8 fret and gradually work your way down from there.

Best of luck!
